Great News

When I was a kid, I loved reading the Detroit Free Press in the morning, especially during baseball season.  I woke up early every morning all the way through high school so that I could look at the box scores from the night before.  Even at the young age of 38, I still went through high school without knowing what the world wide web was.  My passions have moved from baseball to triathlon over the years.  Its not possible to watch the latest triathlon highlights on ESPN just yet.

Instead, I am left with alternative ways to get the latest triathlon news.  I follow 20-30 professional triathletes on Twitter.  It is a wonderful window into the professional and personal lives of people that I would never get to speak with.  It even led to Melanie McQuaid speaking to our students through Skype last year.  The latest Twitter trend is to have people tweeting about races live.  It is fun to listen to a variety of people, with different favorites and agendas, describe the same race through text.

This is a link to an interview with Leanda Cave after her victory in the Ironman World Championship last weekend.  It is wonderful to have first person access to athletes on the day of the event, especially in sports that aren't even covered in the national media outlets.  Here is an example.

I have an opportunity to travel to China from November 10th through November 17th.  Because there is a 12 hour time difference, live communication will be difficult.  However, I will tweet daily.  I also plan to share pictures and a video message each day so that families and students can follow my adventure.  I look forward to entering the world of digital media as a producer instead of just a consumer.

Media has changed.  Has school changed with it?  I'd love to hear your thoughts.
