MEAP

How are we doing?

Our students have been working hard on the MEAP test for the last two weeks.  All students will be assessed in Math and Reading.  4th grade students are also tested in writing and our 5th grade students are also tested in Science.  Students will spend roughly 5 hours testing in total.  Here are a couple links that can show you how OES/DA compares to other schools in Michigan based on the MEAP.

I'm a firm believer that our students are much more than a test score.  However, it is always easier to make that statement when test scores are good.  The hard part to define is what are good test scores.  The State of Michigan ranks OES at the 86 percentile.  That must be good right?  The schooldigger report places us 300 something out of 1500 something.  That must be good right?

Did you know that the best predictors of our children's test scores happen before they even enter school?  Predictors such as family income and family educational background are extremely accurate predictors of a student's standardized test scores.

How are we doing?  I'm happy that our test scores are "good," but I'm proud of some of the things our students are doing.  Did you know that we have roughly 50 students that compete in Academic Games.  Did you know that between OES and DA, we will have over 100 students participating in the First or Jr. First Lego League program?  Our students are always competitive at these events, in some cases even earning national recognition.  The sheer number or participants means something to me.

Has your child talked about taking action?  I can't believe all the actions our students are taking to impact the world around us.  We have students that are hand making duct tape purses, bracelets..... and selling them at school to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Hospital.  While reading that story, did you even think about their MEAP score?

I'm not trying to say that MEAP doesn't mean anything.  These scores are important, but they do not define our school, our staff or our students.

Have a great day.
